From Flame to Filament: A Brief History of Light Before Electricity

We live and breathe modern lighting design. But to truly appreciate today's incredible lighting fixtures and smart controls, it’s fascinating to look back. For millennia, controlling light wasn't about a switch; it was about taming fire. This history of interior lighting and exterior lighting shaped human civilization long before electricity was ever harnessed, proving that the desire for illumination is as old as humanity itself. The Primitive Flame

For tens of thousands of years, light was simply fire. Torches—branches dipped in animal fat or resin—served as the first crude forms of exterior lighting, allowing for navigation and defense after dark. Indoors, hollowed-out stones holding animal fat and a fiber wick provided the earliest interior lighting, allowing families to gather and work long after sunset.

The Wick & Wax

The next major leap was the refinement of fuel. The creation of candles (first from tallow, later beeswax) and enclosed oil lamps in terracotta or metal gave humanity its first portable, consistent light sources. This technology dominated homes for centuries, offering safer, cleaner light than an open fire, setting the foundation for what we now call task lighting.

The Gaslight Revolution

The immediate precursor to our modern era was gas. In the 19th century, coal gas piped into cities fueled the first large-scale street lighting and illuminated the homes of the wealthy. While revolutionary, it was also dangerous and maintenance-heavy, creating a desperate need for a safer, more efficient solution.
